What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy could be defined as:

  • a process of self-examination, emotional awareness and growth.

  • facilitated by a trained therapist educated in human behavior and skilled in techniques to promote personal growth, interpersonal awareness, and change.

  • with the goal of change in thoughts, attitudes, feelings, and behavior that will enhance the ability to enjoy life and relationships.

Although therapy was initially developed to help very disturbed people, therapists today deal with a variety of issues with varying severity.  The most frequent reasons for seeking help are:

  • during crisis such as a loss of a relationship, divorce, problems with children, illness, or job loss.

  • for relief from on-going problems such as depression, anxiety, relationship problems, marital conflict, job issues, and drug/alcohol abuse.

  • for personal growth:  enrichment of personal relationships, career development, increase self-confidence, and self-esteem.
